Dominic Alfano: My Story
I’ve been a Florida realtor since 2001. The most important lesson that I’ve learned for sure is that every year the market changes. There are always indicators that lead us to believe certain conditions will dictate the future but it can change as fast as a New England winter.
My first big lesson happened a few months after I earned my license to sell real estate. Our country was shocked by the tragedy of 9/11. Business came to a standstill. Like most people I didn’t know what to expect. I got a few calls from people that wanted to move closer to their families. My job was to help them and I found my role in the changing market. We got through that.
My next big lesson happened in 2008. The economy crashed. People were losing their homes and I confess that I did not want to be a part of it. I struggled to find my place. As banks began to unload their growing portfolios of foreclosed properties at heavily discounted prices investors saw the opportunities to buy and I found my new role. Families were struggling and we helped them find homes to rent. They may have gone from owning to renting but kids don’t really know or care and most people just wanted their kids to feel safe. We got through that.
I started my own property management business in 2010. I have found my place. We help investors prosper and families enjoy the comforts of a home. Being a landlord has it’s challenges and my wife, Maria, and our son, Rafael, have come together to build a company that we can be proud of and this has become our job. We put our hearts into our business and we have prospered.
The market continues to change every year and there continues to be no promises of the future but what I do know is that if you commit to a job and commit to being the best at your job, you will find your role. An by the way, sometimes your role finds you. This is called opportunity.
