Garbage Disposal Do’s and Don’t Do’s
Hello from the life of property management…with some simple housekeeping tips to make your home smell and work better.
The do’s 😄 and don’t s 😯 of Garbage Disposals:
Keep it fresh!
Even if you don’t dispose food daily, run your disposal daily with running cold water for a few seconds.
Once a month empty two cups of ice cubes into the disposal and grind with running cold water.
To eliminate odors, grind small citrus rinds in the disposal or pour down one cup of vinegar with one cup of baking soda, let if fizz and then flush with cold water.
When running the disposal use cold water to keep fats from melting and sticking.
What goes into the grind chamber should not be more than what fits in the drain strainer. So scoop out larger pieces and compost or throw them in your garbage.
Coffee and other fibrous foods like celery and corn husks should not be grind in the disposal.
If your garbage disposal jams, turn off the electrical power at the breaker. Insert an allen wrench into the center hole on the exterior bottom of the unit and turn. Remove the object from the grind chamber with pliers. Push in the red reset button on the exterior bottom side of the disposal, turn the power on and run with water for a few seconds.
